Dog & Litter Registration

Introduction

This page discusses dog and litter registration under the Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. It does not cover the registration of breeders or kennels under the TDR. For information on the registration of a TDR kennel (as a TDR breeder), please refer to the page, Kennel Registration & Renewal.

To register a new litter, please see the Litter Registration page. To register a single dog, please go to the Single Dog Registration page.

The TDR reserves the authority to modify the requirements of any existing registration types, in addition to adding new registration types, as needed. All changes will be announced accordingly.

This document is intended for all parties interested in processes and policies of the Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. To download a PDF version of these guidelines, please see here.

For the previous (2019) version of registration guidelines, please see here.

1 Background

The Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. (TDR) registers dogs for two main reasons:

  1. To acknowledge and track the international population of Tamaskan Dogs, for the purposes of health recording and the furtherance of the TDR breeding program and the Tamaskan Dog breed; and
  2. To denote the breeding clearance of Tamaskan Dogs within the registry’s population.

All TDR-registered dogs are assigned a uniquely identifiable “number” within the registry. This “number” is an alphanumeric sequence that stays with the dog for the duration of its life. TDR-registered dogs may participate in TDR-sponsored events. As a recognized international Tamaskan Dog registry, TDR registration also allows registered animals to seek further registration with other organizations which in turn handle entry qualifications to events at non-TDR venues.

Thus, any dog who seeks registration with the TDR must be one of the following:

  1. Offspring of existing, registered TDR dogs;
  2. Non-TDR-registered Tamaskan Dogs or dogs of other breeds who have been individually approved for the breeding program; or
  3. Tamaskan Dogs of proven lineage.

Prior to registration, all required information and documented compliance with TDR Breeding Regulations (as needed) on a specific dog must be on file with the TDR. If registering for breeding purposes, the requirements for individual dogs may vary depending on the animal; please refer to the TDR Breeding Regulations for details.

Additionally, all dogs seeking registration with the TDR must be microchipped with a reputable service. The microchip’s service provider and identifier must be provided to the TDR.

Office of Responsibility

All registrations with the TDR are handled by the seated TDR Registrar, who can be reached at [email protected]. The position of “Registrar” is that of a named Officer within the TDR business charter, whose purpose is to document and maintain the historical record of dogs within the breed.

The Registrar works closely with the TDR Board of Directors, the TDR Committee of Breeders, and directly with TDR Breeders and TDR dog owners. This helps to ensure that all information for a dog and its registration is correct, and that registrations are not granted within a vacuum of a single committee or individual.

If any breeder or owner feels that there is an issue or concern with the seated Registrar, please send an email directly to the TDR Board of Directors, at [email protected].

2 Registration Types

The Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. (TDR) recognizes the following types of registrations for Tamaskan Dogs and dogs used within the TDR’s breeding program.

NOTE: The registration types discussed herein refer explicitly to “registration under the TDR.” Registrations granted by other registries do not apply, unless otherwise noted.

2.1 Full

Full registration is issued to all dogs whose parents are Tamaskan Dogs with FULL registration, provided that both parents meet the minimum requirements specified within the TDR Breeding Regulations at the time of breeding.

Effective January 1, 2020: FULL registration is granted to dogs who are the offspring of FULL x FOUNDATION registrations, provided that all other requirements for FULL registration are met. These dogs will be “G1” dogs who will still require complete health testing prior to breeding, as stipulated within the TDR Breeding Regulations.

2.2 Conditional

A dog may be granted CONDITIONAL registration by the TDR under the following conditions:

  1. The dog is the offspring produced by the pairing of approved or pre-approved breeding dogs, but one or both parents have not updated or completed one or more of the health requirements as stated within the TDR Breeding Regulations. The offspring of dog(s) who have received an exception under TDR Breeding Regulations for an incomplete or late health test will still be issued CONDITIONAL status.

NOTE: Prior to January 1, 2020, CONDITIONAL registration was issued to the offspring produced by the pairing of a Tamaskan Dog with FULL registration to a dog with FOUNDATION or CONDITIONAL registration, i.e., the result of an “outcross litter.”

CONDITIONAL registration of a dog whose parents are both Tamaskan Dogs with FULL registration, or whose parents are a Tamaskan Dog with FULL registration and an outcross dog with FOUNDATION/CONDITIONAL registration, may be amended to also have FULL registration, under the following condition:

  1. The dog passes the criteria for approval for the TDR’s breeding program. (Please refer to the next section for further details.)
  2. Both parents of the dog pass the criteria for approval for the TDR’s breeding program, and the seated TDR Registrar is notified by the litter’s breeder of the request to amend. In this scenario, it is expected that the CONDITIONAL registration was issued due to incomplete health testing or lack of final approval to breed the parents. As such, an approved request to amend the CONDITIONAL registration status of a single dog who was bred under these circumstances to FULL will also move all dogs within that litter to FULL registration.

CONDITIONAL registration of a dog who is the offspring of a Tamaskan Dog with FULL registration and a dog with FOUNDATION/CONDITIONAL registration may be granted FULL registration, provided that:

  1. The owner chooses to breed the dog;
  2. The dog passes all requirements for breeding per the TDR Breeding Regulations; and
  3. The owner formally requests the amendment to the Registrar.

Approval to amend the CONDITIONAL registration status of a dog who is the offspring of a Tamaskan Dog parent with FULL registration status and a dog with FOUNDATION registration status will be granted on an individual basis. That is, a dog’s siblings’ registration statuses will not be automatically amended when the petitioned dog’s status is amended.

NOTE: The above conditions for amendment remain applicable to dogs with CONDITIONAL registration from a FULL x FOUNDATION combination, if the CONDITIONAL registration status was issued prior to January 1, 2020.

2.3. Limited

LIMITED registration may be granted to a dog under the following conditions:

  1. The dog has uncertain lineage, or has a noted discrepancy in its DNA profile;
  2. The status is explicitly requested by the dog’s breeder due to:
    • Having a known, documented hereditable health condition that should not be propagated, as noted within TDR Breeding Regulations; or
    • Having a morphologically disqualifying feature as noted within the TDR’s Tamaskan Dog Breed Standard.

All petitions for LIMITED registration statuses will be reviewed by the seated TDR Registrar and the TDR Committee of Breeders prior to granting the status to an individual dog. A dog may not be amended from any other registration status to LIMITED status if the owner decides that the dog will not be bred.

LIMITED registration statuses are typically not amendable. If the breeder and owner believe that a dog’s LIMITED registration status should be amended, a petition must be presented to the seated TDR Registrar and the TDR Committee of Breeders. Reasons that would allow (but does not guarantee) a change in status include, but are not limited to:

  1. The dog “outgrew” a disqualifying morphological feature;
  2. Progress in genetic testing, or the availability of other DNA lineage, is able to definitively prove previously uncertain lineage; or
  3. Progress/knowledge in hereditable conditions makes a previous health concern a non-issue.

2.4 Foundation

Effective June 2019, FOUNDATION registration status is granted exclusively to non-Tamaskan Dogs who are approved under the TDR’s Outcross Program. Specifically, a FOUNDATION dog is defined as a dog who does not have existing Tamaskan Dog ancestry within three (3) generations.

Dogs with FOUNDATION registration have explicit approval to breed under the TDR’s breeding program, as this status is only issued to dogs who have passed all requirements as stated within the TDR Breeding Regulations.

However, the use of dogs with FOUNDATION registration status for breeding shall adhere to the guidelines within the TDR Breeding Regulations; it is not carte blanche for innumerable litters.

2.5 X-Tier (Unsanctioned)

Effective January 1, 2022, an X-tier registration may, upon CoB approval, be issued to dogs who are the offspring of an unapproved (unsanctioned) breeding.

An unapproved breeding is hereby defined as a mating where one or both parents fit into any of the following scenarios, with respect to a major registry[1]:

  1. Unregistered Tamaskan Dogs;
  2. Unregistered non-Tamaskan Dogs who have not been proposed as a Foundation Dog;
  3. Registered Tamaskan Dogs who are not approved for breeding;
  4. Tamaskan Dogs who cannot provide proof of parentage; or
  5. Tamaskan Dogs, registered externally to the TDR, who cannot provide their parents’ complete set of health tests as required by the parents’ register(s).

An X-Tier registration functions as follows:

  • The individual resulting from a pairing that meets the criteria above receives an “X0” denotation in place of the registration’s usual “G#” designation
  • An approved mating with an X0 registration yields an X1 litter
  • An approved mating with an X1 registration yields an X2 litter
  • An approved mating with an X2 registration reverts to the standard G# notation, where the resulting generation number is assigned based on the generation number of the “G” designated dog. If two X2 dogs are bred, the resulting litter will be registered as “G1.”

Additionally, an X0-designated dog will have further restrictions on breeding rights, as defined within the TDR Breeding Regulations. In summary:

  • No breeding prior to three (3) years of age
  • A maximum of two (2) litters
  • A minimum of twelve (12) months between litters

NOTE: An X-Tier registration operates in concert with the FULL, CONDITIONAL, and LIMITED tiers, in that these statuses may be issued to a X-designated registration. FOUNDATION is not eligible for X-registration.

X-Tier registrations are not amendable to having a “G”-number.

[1]A “Major Registry” is defined by the TDR as a recognized Tamaskan Dog registry whose standards of practice meet or exceed the TDR’s published Breeding Regulations and Code of Ethics. As of late 2021, these registries include: Netherlands Tamaskan Club (NTC), Tamaskan Germany (TG), International Tamaskan Register (ITR), and Interessengemeinschaft Tamaskan (IGT)

3 Registering Non-TDR Dogs

The Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. will register Tamaskan Dogs from other major registries. Proof of parentage, parent health tests, and original registration paperwork from the external registry will be required of all extra-registry petitions.

If registering for breeding purposes, the incoming dog must also meet or exceed the TDR’s health testing requirements, as specified within the TDR Breeding Regulations. The incoming dog must also adhere to the standards established within the regulations. All other registration assignments will apply the conditions noted above.

Dogs seeking registration from unrecognized organizations, or if parentage or parent health testing cannot be acquired, will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If approved, these dogs will automatically be designated as an X-Tier registration.

NOTE: The TDR does not require the parent(s) of a dog petitioning for registration to be TDR-registered. However, proof of registration of the parent(s) within the external registry will be required.

4 Amendments

Amendments to a dog’s registration status must meet conditions as outlined specifically within each status’s description and be presented to the seated TDR Registrar using the appropriate TDR form. All requests for amendments need to be formally presented, and will be documented and filed with the TDR.

Registration statuses of individual dogs will NOT be amended for an individual dog if the dog is physically or physiologically unable to breed, e.g., if the dog has been spayed or neutered prior to the request for amendment. If an individual dog who is physically or physiologically unable to breed is a member of a litter that is moving from CONDITIONAL to FULL registration, the individual’s status shall also be updated.

Questions as to whether a dog meets an amendment condition may be addressed directly to the seated TDR Registrar.

As needed, the Registrar will forward any or all cases to the appropriate parties for review, prior to making changes.

5 Paperwork

Registrations include the issuance of an official TDR-stamped certificate stating the dog’s pedigree, owner, and registration status. Paperwork can mailed to either the breeder, or directly to the owner (if requested).

This is done at a modest fee, to support the continued efforts of the TDR. Fees must be paid prior to the assignment of a registration number to a dog, or the generation of the dog’s certificate. The fee schedule is noted in the document entitled, TDR Fee Schedule.

5.1 Authenticity

Authentic TDR registration paperwork, as of July 2019, has the following features:

  1. A gold stamp embossed with the TDR seal;
  2. A TDR watermark in the background;
  3. A colored border denoting the registration status;
  4. An alphanumeric sequence in the bottom left corner; and
  5. A double-sided printout, with the registration on one side, and owner information on the opposite side.

5.2 Copies of Paperwork

Copies of a registration may be sent to either the dog’s breeder or owner, by sending a request to the seated TDR Registrar.

5.3 Updating Paperwork

The seated TDR Registrar should be contacted for any updates required for a registration that is not a correction. Although not necessary, an update includes items such as a change of address, rehomed dogs, etc.

A records update request can be made to the TDR’s database without requesting new paperwork. The TDR Fee Schedule pertains strictly to an update that also requires the issuance of new papers.

5.4 Corrections to Paperwork

The seated TDR Registrar should be contacted immediately if any errors or issues are noticed within an issued registration. All corrections will be filed with the TDR. Please note that “errors” do not include requests for updates or copies.
